Purpose of This

Updated: May 8, 2019

Writing is typically hard for visual artists and I am no exception, but it is useful. It's useful in helping the viewers of my work understand why I make the things that I make and ultimately, I suppose, that is why I am adding this blog to my website.

As an artist I have gradually gotten used to writing artist statements and the more I have done it, the more useful it has become as a tool or method to understanding what I am really doing or really getting at with my work in the studio. I had a professor in grad school suggest writing a statement every week to assess the work of that week and while I can understand why, I don't want to do that. At least not as an artist statement as such.

I want this blog to serve more as a studio journal. I can't help but write in a stream-of-consciousness way, spilling thoughts out, but I'll try to do it in a semi-organized manner. I have always believed that the act of making visual art is a philosophical practice in material form, thinking physically, materially through the act of of making. I want to explain some of that here.

I'd love for you to follow along. You can sign up to do so from a sub-page, if you hover over the blog link on the menu. That will allow you to like and comment as well.
